Birth and Early Years
Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929 in a family home. He was born in the city of Atlanta, Georgia. His dad was Martin Luther King Sr. and was a pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church while his mother, Alberta Williams King, stayed at home to help out with the family. MLK described his dad as “fearless and courageous” and his mom as “softspoken and easy-going” (Primary Source 1).
Martin Luther King Jr. had a pretty comfortable childhood. He was close to his parents, especially his dad. Because his dad was a pastor, he spent a lot of time in church. The book also says that there were two things in his childhood that affected him a lot. The first one is when his grandmother died. The second is when he realized that white people did’t like black people. So his life was kind of poor and not as fun because he couldn’t go to theaters and he couldn’t even go to eat a lunch at a counter at some restaurants. He did not like that at all.
